Homeopathic dilution (also known as "dynamisation" or "potentisation") is a process in which a crude substances (plant, animal, or minerals) are diluted to a certain degree of the original substance which may be a crushed and is diluted with alcohol or distilled water and then vigorously shaken in a process called "succussion". Dr Hahnemann believed that the process of succussion activates the "vital energy" of the diluted substance and that successive dilution increases the "potency" of the preparation.

Potency of a homoeopathy dilution is used to refer to the extent or degree of dilution that a homeopathic remedy has undergone in its manufacturing process. This is indicated by the number and letter listed after the name of the remedy. For example, Arnica 30C has undergone 30 steps of dilution, each step having been a one-to-one-hundred dilution (indicated by the letter “C” meaning centesimal).

Commonly used and available potencies are the 6C, 30C, 200C, 1,000C (1M), and 10,000C ( 10M). Potencies up to 30 are often referred to as low potencies and those of 200 and above are referred to as high Potencies.
There is also decimal dilution scale (notated as "X" or "D") in which the preparation is diluted by a factor of 10 at each stage.
